5 minutes a day that can change your relationship with your child
When family life is busy, most of our words to our children are directions: hurry up, put that away, stop that. Children need those too. But they also need moments where they get our full, warm attention, with no lesson attached. Special play time gives them that in just 5 minutes a day.
How it works
Pick a time when you are not rushed. Choose 2 or 3 simple toys with no rules, like blocks, crayons, or play dough. Put your phone away. Then say: "This is our special play time. You get to choose what we play." For the next 5 minutes, your child leads and you follow.
What to do
- Describe what your child is doing: "You are building a tall tower."
- Repeat or gently rephrase what your child says.
- Copy their play.
- Praise exactly what you like: "Thank you for sharing the crayons."
- Use a warm voice and enjoy it.
What to hold off on
For these 5 minutes, avoid questions, directions, teaching, and criticism. It feels strange at first. Most parents are used to guiding. That is exactly why it works: your child gets to be in charge in a safe, small way.
If things get rough
Small attention-seeking behavior, like whining, you can ignore for a moment and give attention again as soon as your child plays nicely. Hitting or throwing is different: calmly end play time for today and try again tomorrow.
What to expect
It may feel awkward for a few days. After a week or two, many children start asking for their special time. It is not a fix for everything, but it builds a foundation of connection that makes the harder parts of parenting a little easier. These ideas come from research on parent-child play, including Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), and work best for children about 2 to 7.
